Health Minister visits Patient and Client Council
On Tuesday 20 August, Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt visited our Belfast office, on Great Victoria Street, to discuss the important work of our organisation.
PCC Chief Executive, Meadhbha Monaghan said:
“We were delighted to welcome Minister Nesbitt to our Belfast office, and thank him for taking the time to hear about the work of the organisation and our priorities.
“We discussed with the Minister the independent advocacy support we provide to members of the public who have concerns about the health or social care they have received. We explored the benefits independent advocacy services bring to the public, but also to the Health and Social Care (HSC) system. We work independently with the public and HSC organisations to resolve, where possible, issues and concerns they have about their care and treatment.
“We also spoke to the Minister about how independent advocacy can help people facing health inequalities and access issues get the support they need, and have their voices heard. And we outlined our thinking on how the HSC system might better learn from the experiences and feedback from the public, to deliver improved services.
“The Minister also met with a member of the public, to hear their story, which helped illustrate the importance of independent advocacy and the benefits of engaging with the public. We thank the Minister for taking the time to meet with us and we look forward to engaging with him again soon”.
Reflecting on the visit, PCC Chairperson, Ruth Sutherland CBE said:
“It was inspiring to see Minister Nesbitt taking the time and showing such great interest in the work of the PCC. I hope we have started the conversation about a new era of partnership with the public, in shaping their health and social care. By strategically and cohesively engaging with the public, and working in partnership, we can begin to fully appreciate the assets and value the public can bring, through their lived experience, to the challenges we face and the ambitious priorities the Minister has set.”
